Dundee Flower Show

At the Autumn 2008 Dundee Food and Flower Show, Dundee Floral Art Club staged an outstanding educational exhibit on behalf of SAFAS  in the George Gibson Memorial Class;  gaining a justly deserved Gold Medal. The criteria in this class includes:

 Attractiveness to the general public.

Quality of information to the general public giving aims and objectives of the Club/Society.

Use made of available space.

General arrangement and finish of the stand.

The exhibit more than met this criteria and proved a huge hit with both the general public and flower arrangers.

Jean Gibson’s Memorial

On Wednesday 28th November, over 70 SAFAS members, friends and colleagues of the late Miss Jean Gibson gathered in the magnificent setting of the Kibble Palace, Glasgow Botanic Gardens to commemorate the planters and stands commissioned by SAFAS in Jean’s memory. Jean was SAFAS Chairman from November 2002 – September 2003 and died very suddenly in office. Mrs Mary Law MBE, National President read the Appreciation from the NAFAS Chairman, Mrs Valerie Best and Mrs Jean Renfrew a SAFAS Past Chairman, presented the Eulogy on behalf of SAFAS. This service proved to be a most moving and fitting tribute and those present also had the opportunity to remember all other members who are no longer with us. The stunning flowers arranged in the stands were undertaken by Mrs Jean Hosie and her team of Mrs Doris Gilchrist and Mrs Sandra Hughes. The under planting was completed by the staff of the Kibble Palace who will now maintain the permanent planting and flower arranging throughout the year. The containers of stainless steel whilst contemporary reflect the curves, shapes and lines of the newly restored Kibble Palace. Jean had strong links with the Kibble Palace through her association with the RHS and SAFAS involvement with Glasgow Evergreen; as a keen horticulturalist it seemed most appropriate that the Commeration should take place there.
